I love reclaiming urban apples! Like most towns in North America, mine has hundreds of Crabapple trees planted for their ornamental blossoms. These trees are often grafted onto the rootstocks of other varieties of Apple tree. Every so often, the root variety "escapes" and you'll find some big, juicy apples dangling amongst the tiny little crabapples. These apples are rarely tended to in any way, and therefore they're often unattractive, misshapen, discolored, etc. But if you're they type of person who can see the potential in things, you will be richly rewarded for giving these guys just a bit of effort. I've cut all of the bad parts out of this harvest and am dehydrating them for use in my wild trail mix that will also include black walnuts and Hackberries! The Kousa dogwood trees by the county courthouse are fruiting! The only things I love more than their unique texture and flavor (sorta like gritty peaches) are the weird, sideways looks I get from coworkers and passersby as I reclaim the forgotten fruit of this wonderful tree that has so much more to offer than its lovely blossoms. #bewierdwithme #weedeater #wild #wildfood #foraging
You can find wild food and medicine nearly anywhere. This Elderflower I'm gathering is from a spot that is one of my favorites, and it's right in the heart of the city! I'm finding myself falling back in love with urban spaces. I've been pushing the city out of my life and have forgotten how beautiful and how wild she can be. This simple space between a park and a hospital turned up lots of #wild #garlic as well as elder, Hackberry, wild lettuce, and more.
